A stone-picking success for Saffron Walden Town Council!

Lots of supporters descended on the land between the Anglo American Playing Fields and Catons Lane last Saturday, with the mission of collecting as many stones as possible from the town’s latest recreation ground.

SWTCllr Paul Gadd and a team of willing volunteers start work…

The land has been reclaimed, levelled, drained and seeded. But it still has a long way to go before it can be used for its intended purpose – two junior football pitches and a cricket pitch, and hopefully potential for many other users. Unfortunately when the drainage was installed, stones were brought to the surface and the surface wasn’t re-levelled, so the ground has been unusable. The new Town Council is giving the project its very best effort – the surface will be improved and levelled, the stones removed, with better topsoil and more grass seed to be added. The drainage will be further improved, and the perimeter of the field brought into use as well.

Spot the oyster shell…

Several barrow-loads of stones (mainly flints, but all sorts of other things – including an oyster shell!) were removed by the enthusiastic helpers. Many brought their children, and there was even a dog! The weather was perfect, and it was good to work with so many enthusiastic helpers. They came from R4U, the cricket club, the town football club, and the whole day was planned and organised by the tireless Paul Gadd. Well done everybody!
