Parishes, Villages & Towns

Uttlesford is comprised of a number of villages and towns that are divided into parishes. From a local government perspective, the parish is the lowest level of government. A number of parishes form a district ward, and a number of district wards form a county division. A town council is equivalent to a parish council from a local governmental perspective.

Councillors are elected by residents of the parish, but can also be co-opted. The latter is where someone nominates themselves for the parish council and they are accepted by the existing councillors. This situation occurs where there are too few parish council candidates who have put their names forward.
