R4U launches bid to prioritise ECC improvements to Saffron Walden’s pavements and roads – Press Release

Residents for Uttlesford (R4U), the local party of towns and villages, has announced that it is working with the Saffron Walden Town Council to consult residents about improving walking, cycling and driving access to the town. As part of the initiative, R4U has surveyed Saffron Walden and produced a map that shows areas for road and pavement improvements.

Cllr Paul Gadd, R4U’s leader on the Saffron Walden Town Council, said “We are very conscious that most recent and proposed changes to our roads have been to narrow pavements, remove parking, add yellow lines and create one-way streets. They’ve been done to try to justify Uttlesford District Council’s large housing estates on the east. It all feels as if no-one is actually trying to improve things for existing residents. The result is that it is much harder to park and get around and we want to change that. Essex County Council has a small amount of money to be spent by communities to improve roads and pavements. It isn’t enough to make major changes to roads, so for Saffron Walden we’d like to see it spent on making the town easier to access by foot, bike and car.”

Paul Gadd continued “We have surveyed the town and produced a map that highlights over 70 locations for improvements, such as adding, widening or fixing pavements, and providing pedestrian crossings. And we have launched a residents’ survey with the Saffron Walden Town Council. We urge residents to tell us what they’d like to see.”

The survey is at www.Residents4U.org/walden-survey and will be available until 20th November 2015. Responses will be collated and included in a submission to Essex County Council to prioritise spending of their £450,000 Communities’ Highways Fund in Saffron Walden.
