Cllr Alex Armstrong, R4U’s Police and Crime Liaison, said “Residents want the politics taken out of policing. Martin Terry would make an outstanding Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex; he’s been an independent councillor for 13 years and importantly his campaign is supported by ex-chiefs-of-police who want local police officers back on the beat in our towns and villages. We are endorsing his campaign because we believe he is the independent choice for Uttlesford residents. If you think residents should decide for themselves, vote for Martin Terry in May, the only independent candidate.”

PCC Candidate Martin Terry
Essex Police and Crime Commissioner Candidate Martin Terry said “National party-led Police Commissioners aren’t working for locals – they are driven by Westminster politics and forced to abide by national party policy, not the very real needs of locals. In Essex we have one of the UK’s fastest growing populations but the second lowest per-capita spend in policing anywhere in the country. Our current Conservative Commissioner hasn’t demanded more from the government; instead he’s been brow-beaten to oversee the sacking of 100s of officers and closure of police stations. It’s not what residents elected him for. They want a Commissioner who is their advocate; one that is supporting visible and effective policing in their communities, and that’s focussed on reducing crime and keeping residents safe.”

PCC Candidate Martin Terry is standing under the campaign of ‘Zero Tolerance Policing Ex-Chiefs’ which nationally includes a number of independent candidates backed by ex-police chiefs.

Martin Terry continued “If elected, I will have only one boss, residents. I will work tirelessly to fight for essential resources, find solutions to the station closings, get Bobbies back on the beat, and tackle the ‘non-emergency’ crime that locals don’t think is being taken seriously today.”

Martin Terry will be with R4U councillors answering questions from the public in the Saffron Walden Market Square on the morning of Saturday 23rd April, and Great Dunmow Market on the morning of Tuesday 26th.

About Residents for Uttlesford

Residents for Uttlesford (R4U) is the local independent party of north-west Essex towns and villages. Formed in 2014 by a number of residents’ groups, the party believes that on local issues residents should decide, not Westminster parties. R4U’s success has been based on the desire to give local people a voice and implement long range strategic and sustainable plans for their area.

R4U leads Uttlesford District Council (UDC). In its first election in 2015 it became the second party at UDC. In the May 2019 R4U gained majority control of UDC winning two-thirds of the seats. The result delivered the biggest loss of seats by any UK Conservative controlled council in the UK. In 2021 the party won half the Essex County Council seats in Uttlesford district.

R4U also leads Saffron Walden Town Council, where under its stewardship the council has rebuilt finances, invested in community assets, and won multiple awards, including the best run council in Essex. It is a minority party on Great Dunmow Town Council.
