To the contrary actually – too many new houses for the existing infrastructure. Town schools are full. There are not enough primary and secondary school places in the town and so students are being bused to other places to get an education. The Walden (formerly Friends) School was a fee-paying independent school, and so separate from the state education sector. It had seemingly failed to attract new fee-paying students for a host of reasons. The head teacher claimed it was because the local state schools are so good that parents didn’t want to pay to send their children to a private school. It is hard to see that because the local state schools have been rated outstanding for years, so it isn’t a sudden thing. It seemed that they actually failed to create a different and compelling offer that enough parents wanted to pay for.
