R4U led Uttlesford District Council Backs New Five-Authority Plan for devolved Essex

UDC has joined ten local authorities across Essex in supporting the creation of five new unitary councils to replace the current two-tier system. The proposal has strong cross-party support at UDC and across the County, reflecting a shared commitment to delivering local government that is more responsive, accountable, and closer to residents.

Under the suggested model, Uttlesford would join with Harlow and Epping Forest to form a new West Essex Council. This structure aims to have closer local decision-making than the three mega councils proposal being aggressively promoted by Essex County Council.

R4U believes a 5-auhtority plan will give residents a stronger local voice

The abolition of District Councils in Essex is being forced on these councils by Conservative-led Essex County Council as part of their ‘Greater Essex Devolution’ proposal to Government. ECC themselves are proposing a three-authority plan. R4U does not support this is it takes decision-making even further away from local residents than a five-authority approach.

Despite the forced abolishing of UDC, R4U will continue to work for the best outcomes for all residents, ensuring that any future changes protect and enhance local services. R4U also recognises that after the roll-up of District Councils into ‘mega authorities’, the role of town and parish councils will become even more important, and the party continues to fully support them as key partners in serving local communities and residents.
