Uttlesford Mayors thank volunteer organisations for ‘bringing home the bacon’ at Saffron Walden Carnival and Dunmow Flitch Trials

The Mayors of Saffron Walden and Great Dunmow greatly thank the volunteer organisations that have delivered the 8-Day Weekend Carnival and Flitch Trials last week in Uttlesford.

R4U Cllr James de Vries, who is Saffron Walden Mayor, said “This year’s 8-Day Weekend Carnival was spectacular. It felt like the biggest and best-ever celebration after 2 difficult years. Events featured B*Witched, Toploader, Chesney Hawkes, Rory Bremner, and many, many excellent original and tribute acts including our town’s homegrown Blues Brothers band – and of course the huge carnival procession. I’d like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors, but most of all to the organisers, the Saffron Walden Round Table, who through their events and charitable work continue to do so much for our community.”

R4U Cllr Patrick Lavelle, who is Great Dunmow Mayor, added “Who needs Love Island when you’ve got the Dunmow Flitch Trials! In our own historic reality-game-show, dating back to the 13th century and Chaucer, married couples compete to prove that in the last year they’ve ‘not wisht themselves unmarried again’ to win a side of bacon. This year’s three winning couples came from Dunmow, Detroit, and Christchurch, New Zealand, which just goes to show the important role these events provide to our local tourism economy. On behalf of the town, I’d like to personally thank the Flitch Trial organising committee, volunteers, and sponsors for continuing our 900-year tradition of making Dunmow great.”
